What Is Christian Counselling?

Christian counselling is professional counselling from a therapist who shares your Christian faith and can bring it into your sessions when you want them to. It uses the same evidence-based methods as any other counselling — the difference is a shared worldview, not a different technique.

In Canada it is practised by registered psychotherapists, social workers, psychologists and pastoral counsellors. Titles, training and regulation vary by province, so the more useful question is who you are booking with — and how to check.

Find Christian Counselling Near You

Counselling is a local decision, so start with your city. Listed below are the cities with enough verified Christian-owned practices to be worth your time. If yours is not there yet, browse your province — and see the section on online sessions, which often widens the options in smaller markets.

How to Choose a Christian Counsellor

The most important check is not on this directory — it is with the regulator. In most provinces counselling and psychotherapy are regulated, and every practitioner has a registration you can look up yourself.

Before you book, it is reasonable to ask:

Are you registered? Check the provincial regulatory college — in Ontario, the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario — or membership in the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

What do you work with most? Marriage and couples, grief, anxiety, trauma — most counsellors have a focus.

How does faith fit in? Some clients want prayer and scripture in the room; others want a counsellor who simply understands the background. Say which you want.

In person, online, or both? And what are the wait times.

What does it cost, and what is covered? Many registered providers are reimbursed by extended-health plans; ask about sliding-scale sessions if cost is a barrier.

A counsellor who welcomes these questions is telling you something useful.

Christian Counselling vs. Regular Counselling

The methods are largely the same. A Christian counsellor trains in the same evidence-based approaches — cognitive behavioural therapy, emotion-focused therapy, family systems work — and is held to the same professional standards.

What differs is the starting point. You do not have to explain your faith, defend it, or set it aside to be understood, and you can bring it into the work if you choose. Neither approach is clinically superior — for some the shared worldview removes a barrier, for others it is not a factor.

In-Person and Online Christian Counselling

Both are widely available in Canada. In-person sessions keep the work local. Online sessions matter most outside the big metros: where there are only one or two Christian counsellors within driving distance, secure video widens the field to the whole province, often with shorter waits.

One limit worth knowing: counsellors are registered provincially, so an online counsellor generally needs to be registered where you live, not where they do.

How 7 Locals Verifies Listings

Every listing here is checked by a person before it appears. We confirm the business is real: locally owned, operating in Canada, reachable at the details shown, and currently trading. Where a business tells us it is Christian-owned, we take the owner at their word — we do not test anyone's beliefs.

What that check is not: it is not a licence or registration check, not an inspection, and not a clinical endorsement. We do not assess anyone's competence or qualifications. Confirm a counsellor's registration directly with their provincial college before you book.
