The check that matters most is with the regulator, not the directory. In Ontario, psychotherapy is a regulated profession: confirm the counsellor's registration with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), or their membership in the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Both registers are public and take a minute to search.

Then ask the practical questions:

• What do you work with most — marriage and couples, grief, anxiety, trauma?
• How does faith fit into sessions? Some clients want prayer and scripture in the room; others want a counsellor who simply understands the background.
• In person, online, or both — and what is the current wait?
• What does it cost, and what is covered? Many registered providers are reimbursed by extended-health plans, and some Ottawa practices offer sliding-scale or subsidised sessions. Ask before you book.

The same evidence-based therapy as any counselling — cognitive behavioural, emotion-focused, family systems work — delivered by someone who shares your faith and can bring it into the session if you want them to.

In practice, that mostly means you do not have to explain or defend your beliefs to be understood. It is not a substitute for clinical training, and it does not make the work easier or gentler. Ottawa-area practices offer both in-person appointments and secure online sessions.
